SELECTION PROCESS:
Players are selected, in most states, on the basis of open tryouts. These tryouts are conducted by the state association coaches who are recognized for their ability to identify and train players with superior skills. Some state associations combine scouting techniques and invitations to certain players with the open tryouts. Selection of these players is not an easy task. The state association head coach or State Coach will be assisted in the selection process by several other qualified coaches from the club or league level. Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player:
- Technique
- Tactics
- Fitness and Athletic Ability
- Psychological Component (attitude)
All players will be notified of the results by email within approximately 2 weeks following the final tryout session. Pool teams will consist of 20-30 players in each age group pool. Only a maximum of 18 players will be selected from each age group pool for participation in the ODP Championship Tournament in June. Selections for the ODP Tournament Team will be made by late April or early May.

* * BIG CHANGES TO ODP FOR 2020 * *
- Registration fees will only cover Vermont trainings (winter & early spring indoor as well as outdoor); Specifics will be detailed in player offer letter in early December along with coach assignment and makeup of the age group of the team.
- US Youth Soccer ODP, MSL and NLWS are collaborating on Regional and National scouting programs at ODP regional and national training camps. For that reason, ODP Identification Camp will now be by invitation only. In order for players to earn an initiation to ID Camp, it must be issued by an ODP Scout.
- New England states are working together to coordinate a series of events to showcase our players before these scouts. Each of these events will be charged to the player account in addition to the training fees, based on player participation.
- Vermont will also be hosting its own Identification Tournament February 7, 8, & 9, 2020 at The Edge in Williston. Regional Scouts from both the boys and girls programs will be on hand to observe the play.
- These changes apply to all age groups including U12s who are now a part of the larger program.
- U12s will compete in the ODP Championship Tournament in either Delaware (Boys) or New Jersey (Girls), June 5-9, 2020.
There will be much more information to follow, but these are some of the major highlights to expect in the changes for 2020!
