About the Vermont Soccer Association (VSA):
The Vermont Soccer Association is the governing body for youth and amateur soccer in the state of Vermont. VSA is dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of the game by providing leadership, education, and programming for players, coaches, clubs, and communities across the state.
We are seeking a dynamic, strategic, and hands-on Technical Director to lead and grow player and coach development initiatives throughout Vermont.
Position Overview:
The Technical Director is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing VSA’s player and coach development strategies and programs. This role directly oversees the Vermont Olympic Development Program (ODP), ODP Juniors, Vermont ID and Training Centers, and statewide coach education and club support initiatives.
The Technical Director will serve as the leading voice on technical matters across the state and will work collaboratively with clubs, coaches, communities, and the Executive Director to elevate soccer development at all levels in Vermont.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Program Oversight & Management
- Lead and manage all aspects of the Vermont Olympic Development Program (ODP), including:
- Player identification, tryouts, and selection
- Program calendar and training curriculum
- Travel planning, event participation, and competitions
- Communication with parents, coaches, and players
- Management of ODP staff
- Oversee and develop ODP Juniors and Vermont ID & Training Centers to identify and nurture future talent across Vermont.
- Create consistent, high-quality development environments through aligned training methodology and player pathway design.
2. Coach Education & Development
- Serve as the lead on all coach education across Vermont:
- Schedule, coordinate, and deliver U.S. Soccer grassroots and advanced license courses
- Mentor coaches at all levels, providing observation, evaluation, and feedback
- Support and develop Club Technical Directors and Directors of Coaching across the state
- Promote access to continued education and certification pathways
- Ensure coaching standards align with U.S. Soccer guidelines and best practices.
3. Player Development Pathways
- Design and implement clear player development pathways from grassroots to elite levels
- Collaborate with local clubs and schools to increase access to training and identification events
- Provide guidance and support for players seeking regional, national, and collegiate opportunities
- Lead communication strategies for informing families and players about development opportunities.
4. Club and Community Support
- Act as a technical resource and advisor to member clubs and community soccer organizations
- Facilitate collaboration and partnerships with clubs to enhance programming, development plans, and access
- Support community engagement initiatives, including underserved and rural soccer programs
- Promote inclusivity, diversity, and access to quality soccer experiences statewide.
5. Administrative and Budget Management
- Manage technical program budgets, including ODP and education initiatives
- Oversee staff hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and evaluations for technical programs
- Ensure compliance with VSA policies, SafeSport, and U.S. Soccer standards
- Track program performance and provide annual reports and recommendations to the Executive Director.
6. Leadership & Communication
- Serve as a public-facing representative of VSA in all technical matters
- Maintain regular, effective communication with parents, coaches, club leaders, and VSA staff
- Represent VSA at regional and national technical meetings, events, and conferences
- Inspire a shared vision of development and excellence across the soccer community.
Qualifications:
- Minimum U.S. Soccer “B” License (or equivalent); “A” License preferred
- 5+ years of coaching and/or technical leadership experience, ideally with youth or state association programs
- Proven success managing soccer development programs and coach education
- Strong understanding of player pathways, talent identification, and long-term athlete development
- Exceptional communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Experience in budgeting, program administration, and staff management
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel across Vermont
