ODP Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of ODP?

The purpose of the Vermont ODP program is to identify, train, and develop the most advanced players in the state to their full potential. Once identified these players are provided with the opportunity to compete with and against elite players within the Region and across the country. The Vermont ODP program is one step in the National Player Pathway.

What Age Groups are eligible for ODP teams?

ODP training pools will be formed in the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 age-groups for both boys and girls.  Some age groups may be combined based on participation numbers. Players born in 2014 and 2015 can participate in the program in the Fall.

Can you explain the tryout and selection process?

During the tryout process players participate in a variety of technical and tactical training activities and then a small-sided or full game format. From these activities the professional coaching staff for the age group make their assessment of each player. The professional coaching staff make the final assessment on each player and then select the top players in each age group for Age Group State training pools.

What should I do if I am not selected?

Tryout the following year!!! The ODP program is for youth players who are developing technically, tactically, physically and emotionally. We all develop at different ages and at different rates. For this reason, it should be noted that the ODP process is completely new each year for every player. Our teams are filled with players who were not selected in any given age group the year befor

What if I missed the tryout and selection process?

It’s okay. We can do a late tryout at different times throughout the year. Contact John Curtis, ODP Director and Director of Coaching at doc@vermontsoccer.org for more information.

How often does the pool train and how much does it cost?

The state ODP pool will be named in the Fall and will begin training in January and continue through June. ODP is not intended to conflict with club soccer, rather it is designed to complement the development being done at the club level. The cost to participate varies depending on the season, which helps cover facility rentals, event fees, coaching and admin expenses.

Anticipated costs for 2023-2024

  • Vermont Development Program (2014-2015) – $110
  • ODP Fall (2009-2013) – $155
  • ODP Fall Tryouts (2007-2008) – $50
  • ODP Winter Training (2007-2013) – $225
  • ODP Spring Tryouts (2007-2013) – $30
  • ODP Spring Training (2007-2013) – $150
  • East Region ODP Tournament (2007-2012) – $175
What does the pool do in addition to training?

Events vary depending on the development phase. However, typically we participate in friendly ODP events. Each event is billed per participant actual costs prior to the event taking place. The goal is to compliment the club calendars while working to provide our players with additional opportunities to develop and compete against some of the best players/teams in the country.

When are the State Teams announced?

Age Group pools are announced prior to an event. The pool will train throughout the year and players will be selected from the age group pool to represent Vermont in regional events. State Team players are identified mid-May during the spring training to participate in the East Region ODP Tournament. In June, some players will be selected to represent Vermont at the East Region ODP ID Camp in July.

What is the East Region ODP Tournament?

Each year the Vermont ODP teams participate in the East Region ODP Tournament the second weekend in June. This event is hosted by US Youth Soccer’s East Region and draws ODP teams from multiple states across our region as well as college coaches from across the nation. The goal of the event is to help players come together in a competitive environment against strong competition from other states. This is an opportunity for the players to showcase their individual and team abilities to the East Region ODP Staff and College Coaches in attendance.

What is the East Region ID Camp?

The East Region ODP Identification Camp is the culminating event of the ODP year.  It is an opportunity for a select few Vermont players to individually represent the state at the next level, competing with/against other outstanding players from the East Region (New Hampshire, Vermont, New York East, New York West, Pennsylvania West, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania East, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine). It is from this camp that players are selected for the East Region ODP Team to participate in the USYS Interregional in January in Orlando, FL.

How much does East Region ID Camp cost?

The fee for the East Region ID Camp is approximately $400 plus transportation, housing, and meals.

When and where are ODP practices?

Training will take place at a variety of complexes throughout the state on Friday or Sunday evenings.

Who are the Vermont ODP coaches?

Vermont ODP coaches are coaches holding National Coaching Licenses, area college coaches, high school, and club coaches.
